What are chekka bommalu?

Chekka bommalu is Telugu for wooden toys (koyya bommalu means the same). The best-known are Kondapalli toys, carved from Tella Poniki wood, and Etikoppaka toys, lathe-turned and coloured with natural lac — both from Andhra Pradesh.

Are your wooden toys safe for children?

Etikoppaka toys are coloured with natural lac dyes and have smooth, rounded shapes, which is why they have long been made for small children. Kondapalli pieces are hand-painted and suit slightly older children and display. Small parts are not suitable for babies under three, so please supervise young children.

Do you deliver wooden toys across India?

Yes. We ship to every state in India. Orders are packed by hand and dispatched within 6–8 business days, and you can also collect in person from our shop in Kamala Nagar, ECIL, Hyderabad.

No. Nirmal toys are a separate Telangana craft. We specialise in Andhra Pradesh wooden toys — Kondapalli and Etikoppaka — bought directly from the artisan families.

Chekka bommalu from Andhra Pradesh

Chekka bommalu is simply Telugu for wooden toys, and koyya bommalu means the same. Andhra Pradesh has two great wooden toy traditions, and this collection brings both together. Kondapalli toys are carved from soft, light Tella Poniki wood and painted by hand. Etikoppaka toys are turned on a lathe from ankudu wood and coloured with natural lac, which gives them their smooth, rounded shapes.

Both crafts carry a Geographical Indication tag, and every piece here is bought directly from the artisan families who make them. You may also know the Nirmal koyya bommalu of Telangana — a separate painted-wood tradition that we do not stock. Everything on this page is Kondapalli or Etikoppaka work.

What are chekka bommalu?: Chekka bommalu is Telugu for wooden toys (koyya bommalu means the same). The best-known are Kondapalli toys, carved from Tella Poniki wood, and Etikoppaka toys, lathe-turned and coloured with natural lac — both from Andhra Pradesh.
Are your wooden toys safe for children?: Etikoppaka toys are coloured with natural lac dyes and have smooth, rounded shapes, which is why they have long been made for small children. Kondapalli pieces are hand-painted and suit slightly older children and display. Small parts are not suitable for babies under three, so please supervise young children.
