How clay bommalu are made

Matti Bommalu start with clay, cleaned and kneaded until it is smooth enough to hold detail. Artisans shape each figure by hand, often taking the basic form from a simple mould and then finishing the features, folds and ornament by hand.

The shaped pieces dry slowly in the shade before firing, and are painted once they have cooled. Terracotta takes colour warmly, which is why these figures look softer and richer than a moulded resin equivalent.

Handling clay figures

• Terracotta chips more easily than wood, so keep pieces away from table edges and busy surfaces.
• Dust with a dry, soft brush rather than a cloth, which can catch on fine detail.
• Keep them dry: unglazed clay absorbs moisture.
• Store in the original packing with padding between pieces, never stacked directly.
