Clay Bommalu (Matti Bommalu) — Handmade Terracotta Dolls

Clay Bommalu, or Matti Bommalu — traditional handmade clay dolls and figurines, hand-shaped and painted by artisans. Ideal for festival displays, home decor and gifting. Shop our clay bommalu collection online, delivered across India.

How clay bommalu are made

Matti Bommalu start with clay, cleaned and kneaded until it is smooth enough to hold detail. Artisans shape each figure by hand, often taking the basic form from a simple mould and then finishing the features, folds and ornament by hand.

The shaped pieces dry slowly in the shade before firing, and are painted once they have cooled. Terracotta takes colour warmly, which is why these figures look softer and richer than a moulded resin equivalent.
